Description
Plants need nutrients for their growth and development. This class will focus on how plants acquire nutritious, essential elements from the soil. Mechanisms of mobilization and uptake used by roots will be presented, as well as transport and distribution within the plant. The class will start with an introduction of what are essential and non-essential elements, and present macro- and micronutrients. The function of the different types of transporters will be presented, as well as how they are regulated to adjust the uptake to the needs of the plants. We will then study the transport system of individual nutrients, their distribution, storage and physiological significance.
